Michael Johnston


Michael is a third-year undergraduate student at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music studying voice performance. Growing up in Toronto, he attended St. Michael’s Choir School for 8 years, where an exceptional choral, theoretical, and instrumental program provided the foundation for his musical development. For his two years final years of high school, Michael was also a member of the Taylor Academy for Young Artists at the Royal Conservatory of Music, an in depth program including masterclasses, semi-staged performances and individual coachings with the talented faculty and guest artists. Michael’s earliest musical experience was in the Toronto Children’s Chorus at the young age of 6 and he now continues his choral singing as the Tenor lead at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church and as a Sidgwick Scholar in the Orpheus Choir of Toronto.

Studying in the studio of Elizabeth McDonald, Michael has participated in several musical festivals and competitions as a soloist throughout Canada and the U.S. including, The North York Music Festival, The Kiwanis Musical Festival of Canada, NATS Regional Auditions, and the Classical Singer Competition (USA). Michael’s stage credits include, male lead Nick Piazza in the St. Clement’s School production of the musical FAME, Andy Anderson in U of T Opera’s 2016 production of Britten’s Paul Bunyan, and an understudy (George) and chorus member in Opera on the Avalon’s world premiere of Ours by John Estacio in July 2016.
